HOW TO MEASURE A ROOM

If you’re reading this guide right now, you’re probably getting ready to begin your first project. Although it may seem like a small detail, taking proper room measurements is vital to your project’s success. This is why we’ve put together a quick guide for you so you can be sure that your measurements accurately reflect the dimensions of your room.

In this video we walk you through the measurement process to ensure that your measurements are accurate and the process is stress free. All you need is a pencil, a paper and a tape measurer. We also recommend taking pictures of your space before you begin your project.

1.	The first step in measuring a room is to sketch out the shape of your room. Now, we know not everyone is an artist, so always draw in pencil and use a ruler to guide you along the way. To begin your sketch, draw the four walls of your room, numbering each wall: Wall 1, Wall 2, Wall 3, and Wall 4. Then, mark any openings such as windows or doors that are also in the room.
2.	Now, we start measuring. Measure Wall 1 and write down the appropriate measurements. Do this for each wall around the room and mark it down in your rough sketch.
3.	Now we start taking account for openings. Openings can be things like windows and doorways. After measuring the walls, measure the distance from one corner of a wall to the opening. Mark this distance on your sketch.
4.	Then, measure the opening (this includes any trim or casing attached to the opening) and record the width of the opening on your sketch.
5.	To complete the measurement of this opening, put the tape measure on the outer edge of the opening and stretch it all the way to the opposite corner of the wall. Record this measurement on your sketch.
6.	Time to check your math! Take the three measurements from each wall (corner to opening, opening width, opening to corner) and add them together. The sum should be equal to the length of your wall.
7.	Next we create an elevation drawing of each wall showing window and door locations, finished ceiling heights, and any suspended light fixtures that may interfere with our design. Make sure you also make note of appliance dimensions so you can design them into your space.

After completing 10 steps, you’re finally done, so pat yourself on the back. You did a great job. The hardest part is over and the fun part is about to begin. You get to start making all of those design ideas that are floating around in your head into a reality!
